DOUBLE COMEBACK FOR TURKEY TO DEFEAT SPIRITED PUERTO RICO

Caguas, Puerto Rico, September 15, 2015 – At a close five-setter in Pool H, Turkey needed extra-effort to defeat a battling side of Puerto Rico 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 15-12) which was very close to their first win of the competition, only falling in the final points of the fifth set. Local spiker Karla Santos performed superbly with a tournament-high 27 points, but Turkey had many more options as five players finished with double digits and three of them tied with 16 – Rida Erlalelitepe, Yagmur Kilic and Su Zent. That offensive variety was too much to handle for the energetic Puerto Rican defence, well led by libero Gabriela Ramos. Puerto Rico were ahead through all the first set and, when Turkey pressured, a sensational defensive move by libero Ramos and a touch by Lopez enabled the win. However, the Turkish side didn’t suffer the blow and swiftly reached the draw led by Erlalelitepe and Germen. The following sets repeated the story, as Puerto Rico unlocked a tight chapter at the very end with more Ramos’ digs and some solid blocks on Kilic, but Turkey answered in a rock-solid way and the tie-break came true. At the decisive chapter, a soft touch by Germen placed Turkey 9-7 and they stayed ahead to celebrate 15-12.
